| Mom calls |
[Jul. 19th, 2008|11:58 am] |
So mom called me on my cell just a few minutes ago, and I answered because I thought it was someone else.Me: Hello?
Mom: Hi Dsign, how are you?
Me: Um, hi.
-noise-
Mom: Can you hear me? How are you?
Me: Um, remember when I asked you not to call unless it was an emergency?
Mom (angry): How am I going to be able to ask how you're doing or how much money you need?
Me: I guess that's something I'm not interested in right now.
Mom: ...
Me: So, I'll be going now.
Mom: ... Not much else to say.
She also left a message on clocktor's phone, and I've got his permission to post it, so soon enough... |

| Politics - Old Vs. New |
[Jul. 7th, 2008|01:41 pm] |
This is what I keep mentioning: the idea of old vs. new, and how some politicians sell themselves on the idea of change.
Old guy vs change: McCain, Obama images take shape
It's how Schwartzenegger and others got elected, and how Perot got so much attention. And it's dangerous to choose someone simply 'for change'. |

| Movie Night: Across The Universe |
[Jun. 28th, 2008|08:06 am] |
Last night clocktor and I watched Julie Taymor's Across The Universe, with makebi unexpectedly joining us (we both didn't really think it would be his kind of movie). We watched it on C's new BIG tv, which was nice.
So it was a fun night, though C. noticed the ending fell a bit flat. I'm curious why that's true - maybe just the ramping up through into the middle of the movie, then leading into a rather stock-feeling ending.
I enjoyed it again. Or maybe, for the first time (heh, my review).
Noticed a bunch of small hiccups throughout the movie - slightly awkward cuts, etc. Nothing major, but they were more prominent on the second viewing.
Think I like this one - her best work yet. |

| Wireless Network Is Go! |
[Jun. 26th, 2008|07:23 am] |
Today, after over a week of waiting, I got my wireless network up. So now instead of leeching off of someone else's poor security (shameful, I know), I am now official (and have a much better/faster/stronger connection to boot - it's the Six Million Dollar Man of connections).
The landlord, who says he set up the wireless, gave me a number though he couldn't say what it was for. So I tried a bunch of stuff which didn't work.
So this morning I finally bumped into one of my elusive new roommates who gave me the same number, but called it a key. Ah, so now I know what it's for. Well, that and the Linksys router is called 2Wire (the default name for some 2Wire routers) for some awful reason ("linksys" is the default). (Confusingly, I get a noticeably stronger signal from another router called "linksys".)
Now all that's left to do is go read War And Peace.*

| Supreme Court Rejects Death Penalty For Raping Children |
[Jun. 25th, 2008|02:43 pm] |
I only wish they had left off "for raping children". When will we finally respect ourselves? Morality/philosophy's true colors are shown during adversity. I know of straight people who say they 'accept' gay people, yet would disown their own offspring over it.
Yahoo! News: Court rejects death penalty for raping children
*
I use adversity to my advantage in making decisions. I should write about it sometime. I seem to be able to pick out superior products when researching them by looking for and qualifying others comments. But not just any comments, the ones that are critical of the product. Then I qualify those criticisms by looking for patterns, signs that the writer had insight into the product, and things like that. |

| Minor Update |
[Jun. 18th, 2008|06:52 pm] |
Moving is progressing slowly. Ack, like anything else has gone quickly over the past few months.
Major migraine yesterday. Ug. At least I don't feel too wiped out today.
Had dental work done Tuesday - temp. cap to prepare for first crown. Cap came off and broke last night. Spent till early afternoon at dentist today having replacement cap made. No word yet on the charge for this.
Got a new(er) computer a few weeks back. Running smoothly so far, though I don't think I have things set up correctly because it's not that much faster than my old one. Have to decide whether to reinstall 2K or switch to XP. I'll eventually switch, just not sure if I'm ready yet.
Sold a bunch of extra stuff. Getting money is always nice.
Been getting to bed at a more reasonable time lately. Unfortunately, been waking up around 5am. Hmmm, never seems to be any balance in my life. :) |

| Calling Mom: Updating My Phone Number |
[Jun. 11th, 2008|10:48 am] |
Today is the first time I called/spoke to my mom in over a year.
Dialing her number, I was rather anxious about it all - that it would fall apart at a moments notice.
So I told her my new number and got her new address from her. I told her the terms were still the same - only call if it's an emergency. She half-laughed saying if it was really an emergency, it probably wouldn't be her doing the calling.
She was calm and restrained. We wished each other well. She started talking about my brother, and I cut her off saying "I didn't call to have a conversation". She replied she understood. We told each other to take care and the conversation ended.
Sanity!
And the entire call lasted under three minutes.
This is easily the sanest conversation we've ever had, though on reflection that's not surprising because of the constraints. |

| Mom Calling: The Decent Zone |
[Jun. 11th, 2008|10:42 am] |
Yesterday mom called three times:
June 10th, 3:44pm
Edits: "Is someone there now? Dsign, I expect you to call me back..." "My phone number is the same. 8XX-XXXX. Be a decent person..."
Short and sweet - or short and something. Then she called again at 3:49pm and at 5:05pm, but no message.
Did she really say "voices"? |

| Mega Mother Message: The Big Wandering Cloud (Of An Upset God) |
[Jun. 10th, 2008|12:26 pm] |
If you've never listened to another message, now is the time. Clocking in at just over four minutes, you just can't listen to this and not laugh. In the end, the machine mercifully cuts her off, proving that there is in fact a god or at least some cloud-inspired programmers who put a timelimit on messages.
June 7th:
Edits: "Dsign, did you see that big cloud..."
"I can't protect you, Aunt M can't protect you..."
"Besides that we don't want them here. Right? Ask Clocktor. He'll tell you that Jews and Christians..." |

| Mother Fodder: Lying Politicians & Global Warming |
[Jun. 10th, 2008|12:11 pm] |
More bait than the annual international worm parade that marches past Jerry's Bait Shop in downtown Wormsville.
May 22nd:
Edits: "I wanted to talk to you Dsign and to you Clocktor..."
Reference to dad - "Somebody else used to always lie first to me..."
Later that same day:
Edits: "Hi Dsign I was, uh, I thought of something after I hung up..." |

| Mr. Science - Ernie Kovacs Revisited |
[Jun. 6th, 2008|10:17 am] |
This is a great example of Kovacs work because of its timeless nature. I can easily see this being on tv today (aside from being in B&W).

| Death To Silent Updates! |
[May. 23rd, 2008|12:01 pm] |
It is a handy thing for stuff connected to the internet to automatically update itself, potentially fixing problems or adding new features. But today I experienced the downside of this, the side where marketing gets too creative for their own good.
Our Siemens DSL modem has a built-in ICSA-certified firewall with port-forwarding and such - or it had, until today's automatic update that can only be described as crippleware*.
Gone are the menus of features and setting. Gone are the firewall settings. Gone are the DHCP settings allowing for multiple computers. Gone. And in place of all this, there is a new "SBC" blue logo, ominously perched over the once-colorful menu bar now laid out in a stark blue-and-white motif. The only remaining reminder that they ever existed are a few pictures in the original owners manual that I stared at in disbelief.
I wasted two hours trying to figure out what was wrong, resetting the modem and such, only to find people pointing the finger at SBC's silent and automatic updates. And there's no way to go back. Even if there were, the automatic updates would replay the scenario all over again.
I'm upset enough as it is, but what if I had been relying on the certified firewall features to protect my home network? Would they have silently disappeared, taking with it all of my internet security in a flash?
I hate these kind of "stupid pet tricks" that businesses play with their customers.
(*it's true that this 'upgrade' could have had real reasons behind it, like that these features only caused problems - except that this modem is successfully used in other markets without the crippleware) |

| Hitchcock: Dial M For Murder // Strangers On A Train |
[May. 21st, 2008|10:18 am] |
Recently watched these both. Strangers turned into quite a surprise, and it may now be my favorite. It's certainly in the top five if not the top two!
Can't believe I didn't see it earlier.
Dial M was decent enough, if a bit over-acted like most stuff from that era. |

| Mom Report - Hanging Up On Aunt |
[May. 21st, 2008|09:40 am] |
I talked to my aunt (mom's sister) a few weeks ago. When I asked how my mom was doing, she said my mom wouldn't talk to her and hangs up when she calls - that is, UNTIL my mom called my aunt a few weeks ago and they had a conversation as if none of it happened.
Ug.
This has happened to me many times. It's a relief that I'm not alone, but I wouldn't wish such antics on anyone. |

| Mysterious Shipment Arrival = Mom + Prostate Pills |
[May. 20th, 2008|05:01 pm] |
Today I got a package. I was hoping it was some computer memory I had ordered. Turns out its 2 bottles of Prostate-SF prostate pills.
According to their included paper catalog (they apparently don't do web sales!):"Helps to reduce an enlarged prostate, dribbling and prostatic pain."
Wow, I didn't know I was even suffering!
Now, just reading through it all, I'm having phantom prostate twinges. Lol.
EDIT: Ok, I completely bunged it. I left out that the pills were from my mom - a gift according to the packing slip. Not that we talked about it, etc. They arrived out of the blue, no warning. |

2. Hey clocktor, remember when you told me what great parents we were?
